Linux loaders.

by Day Brown <daybrown@[EMAIL PROTECTED] > Mar 26, 2008 at 01:02 PM

When you run LOADLIN, does that replace dos, or run on top of dos? or
just replace part?

And speaking of part, I've used PART.EXE to rewrite the MBR boot
loader for Linux distros when GRUB or Lilo dont work.

I posted that info to a linux list in response to a query about Linux
not loading. The silence was just deafening. They most definately did
not want to hear of something you can do with dos that you cant easily
do with Linux.

I do almost all my surfing & email with this platform, running on
Xandros 4. I've another I do all my dos work on, but then want to
upload that to my website, http://daybrown.org
which I am doing now
with Slackware. But its kinda klutzy; it wont even give root
permission to write on the dos drive. It also requires me to log in
and type a password.

The Linux developers all work in networked environments, and just dont
get it. If someone accesses my pc, I dont have a security problem, I
have a family problem. One of the reasons I like dos is that I can
turn on the PC, go get a cuppa coffee, and when I return, my desktop
is waiting for me. Of the dozen or so distros I've tried, only one
asked me if I wanted to set it up that way, but then didnt do it like
that anyway.

So, I'm kinda thinking of putting together my own distro dedicated to
this one task, the ftp and manage my website. I cant logon the net
with dos. I could back when I was using the dish from Wildblue, but at
the time I needed another, they were not taking any more customers, so
I hadda get one from Hughes.net. Hughes is more reliable and faster,
but wont let me logon with dos.

SO- I need the most convenient way to get to and from linux from dos.
I've looked at LFS, Greycat and NimbleX, which mite do, but all have a
lotta bloat with source code for non x86 platforms and apps I'll never
use.

Part of the robusticity of FREEDOS & DR-DOS is that the programmers
know they are working on an x86, and do not have to rely on a compiler
to create code to do what they have in mind. Linux fans dont wanna
hear that either. but does anyone know of a distro planned from the
ground up to be run specifically on the x86?
