BT were offereing an upgrade of my 2mb connection to 8mb which I
accepted. This week they changed me over and the maximum speed I can
get on my line is 4.5mb. I use a Netgear DG834G modem / router
wirelessly and my OS is Mac 10.3.9, I use an iBook G4.
My statistics look like this:
ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 2784 kbps 448 kbps
Line Attenuation 60 db 12 db
Noise Margin 6 db 12 db
So, on the Broadband speed test on the adslguide.org.uk site gave me
these results:
Speed Test Results
Downstream 1,792.4 Kbps ( = 1.8 Mbps )
Upstream 373.4 Kbps ( = 0.4 Mbps )
However, on this site:
ftp://ftp.blueyonder.co.uk/
I downloaded a large file and firefox clocked it at 237 kb/s.
So, this upgrade happened on the 14th June. On that particular day my
internet was intolerably slow - 10kb/s. On the 15th June it was back
at my normal 2mb/s rate, I always turn my modem off at night, I don't
know if this would make any difference to things. I have been at 2
mb/s ever since and it isn't getting any faster for me. I did leave
the modem on last night (Friday) and it's been on ever since then.
What I was wondering, because my modem connection statistic for
downstream reads 2784, is it going to get any faster than this unless I
reboot my modem? I do also note that BT says it can take up to 10 days
for things to settle down.
The reason why I turn it off at night is because i once read that
Netgear's power supplies can burn out if left on for considerable
periods of time.
Do you guys have any advice that you can offer me? Should I wait 10
days and see what happens? Do I need to adjust any MTU or RWIN
settings? I don't actually understand MTU and RWIN but I've read that
some people who have speed issues adjust these settings and things
appear to improve. I haven't touched mine since I got the Mac and I
wouldn't know how to adjust them anyway.
I hope that someone can help me.
Binge.
