CD & Zip drives no-op

I haven't used my CD & Zip dirves since August.

I don't believe I made any major changes, but they don't seem to be
working. I knows they are there but acts like they are
unformatted. (they ARE formatted.) I suspect this is a small and
stupid problem, but have no idea.

Any clues, checklists?
